That’s A Lot of Sand

That’s A Lot of Sand

Yesterday was another long travel day. We left Horsetooth around 9:30 in the morning and didn’t get to the sand dunes until about 4:00 in the afternoon. By the time we got everything hooked up and ate some dinner, we were all beat and just relaxed in bed for the rest of the night.

Great Sand Dune Oasis: ($38/night): This campground only had 20 RV sites and all are full hook-ups. Unfortunately, we are here a little early in the season so they don’t have the water turned on at the sites but we were able to fill up before parking. The views of the sand dunes are pretty amazing from any of the sites. Luckily, we were able to make a reservation for Thursday and Friday night so near the sand dunes.

This morning we got up a little earlier and fueled our bodies quick before heading to check out the sand dunes. It was a little chilly but overall not too bad. Buster and Sadie loved the water but weren’t huge fans of the sand. We spent about an hour walking around and hanging out before heading back to our campsite. Buster just can’t hike near as long now that he tore his CCL.

Derek and I were a little disappointed we didn’t get to spend a little more time in the actual dunes. The place we are staying rents sleds ($20/day) to ride the dunes, but we brought a plastic sled with us that we wanted to try out. We hung outside for a little after getting back from the dunes to let the dogs dry off. After talking a bit, we decided to just kennel the dogs and head back to the sand dunes for just a little long. Our sled was a huge failure, I would recommend renting one if you actually want to make it down the hills.

Tonight we will probably grill out and just relax a little bit outside. The weather has been really nice here the last couple of days. Tomorrow we have another day of travel ahead of us. Our next stop is Durango, CO – which is about a  4 hour drive through the mountains. Derek has always thought it would be a neat place to live, so we figured this would be the best time to check it out.
